WEB DESK: A train in northeastern Thailand derailed on Wednesday when a construction crane fell onto three carriages, killing 25 and injuring around 80, according to police.
The accident occurred in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 km northeast of Bangkok, on a train heading to Ubon Ratchathani.
Police confirmed 25 fatalities, with searches underway for more victims. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn stated there were 195 passengers onboard and pledged a full investigation.
The crane, part of a high-speed rail construction project, collapsed onto the passing train, causing derailment and a brief fire.
Rescue teams worked to free passengers from damaged carriages, with some severely injured individuals already taken to hospitals.
The rail project, designed to link Thailand with China via Laos, is being built above existing tracks. Part of the fallen crane remains supported by stanchions for the new rail line.
China’s Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the accident, noting the section under construction appears to be managed by a Thai company. The project is set to connect Bangkok to Nong Khai by 2030, with partial progress reported last year.
