KP govt allocate Rs.4 billion for Tirah displacement

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs.4 billion to assist residents temporarily displaced from Tirah Valley in the Khyber district, in preparation for an upcoming targeted security crackdown against militants.

According to an official communication from the KP Finance Department, the funds have been approved specifically for ongoing activities related to the depopulation process of Tirah and other operational preparations within District Khyber. This financial support is provided under the FATA Disaster Management Authority grant for the fiscal year 2025–26.

The official letter clarified that these funds will be charged to the Social Protection and Rehabilitation budget, sourced from the approved budget allocation for 2025–26. The money will be deposited into the Special Deposit Funds Account of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), maintained under the Public Account, and will not be transferred to any commercial or designated bank accounts. All necessary financial and regulatory protocols must be completed prior to the utilization of these funds.

Displacement of residents from Tirah Valley began last Friday following an agreement between local authorities and a tribal elders’ committee comprising 24 members. This decision was finalized after negotiations last month, during which most of the tribal committee’s demands were accepted, with some conditions amended.

Displaced families are currently being registered at Paindai Cheena, where the district administration has set up arrangements for their assistance. Verified families will receive mobile SIM cards issued by NADRA as part of the registration process. Additionally, the administration is providing Rs22,000 per vehicle as immediate relief to affected families.

Tirah Valley, situated along the border with Afghanistan and covering parts of Khyber and Orakzai districts, has experienced a recent surge in militancy activity. The residents initially demanded 27 conditions, which were largely accepted, before agreeing to the temporary relocation ahead of the security operation.
