ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has declared Thursday, February 5, a nationwide public holiday in observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day. All governmental offices, semi-government agencies, banks, and educational institutions will remain closed on this day.
A notification issued by the Cabinet Division states: “The 5th of February (Thursday) will be observed as a public holiday across the country in honor of Kashmir Solidarity Day.” The notification also mentions that a one-minute silence will be observed at 10:00 AM across the nation to honor the Kashmir Martyrs.
Kashmir Solidarity Day is an annual national event in Pakistan, held on February 5, to demonstrate support and unity with the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. It also honors the efforts of Kashmiri freedom fighters seeking independence from Indian rule and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in the ongoing conflict.
Throughout the country and internationally, rallies and demonstrations are organized to show support for the Kashmiri cause. The day was first marked in 1991 and has since become a significant occasion for political, religious, and social groups to voice their solidarity.
Participants in these events include politicians, religious leaders, opinion makers, and public figures who deliver speeches advocating for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute. The day often features marches, rallies, conferences, and seminars aimed at raising awareness and urging diplomatic solutions.
A notable activity is the formation of human chains along major routes leading into Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from Pakistan. Citizens stand hand-in-hand, creating a visible symbol of unity and reassurance to Kashmiris that they are not alone in their struggle for independence.
Cultural programs, festivals, and exhibitions celebrating Kashmiri heritage are also held, promoting the region’s rich traditions and culture. Media outlets broadcast special talk shows, dramas, and songs reflecting the hardships faced by Kashmiris over the years.
Educational institutions participate actively by organizing debates, discussion forums, and student activities that focus on the Kashmiri issue. These initiatives aim to foster understanding and encourage dialogue about a peaceful settlement for Kashmir.
