Punjab govt launches ambitious initiative to make pakistan green with restoration of Margalla forests

LAHORE: The Punjab government has intensified its efforts to promote environmental sustainability, placing the rehabilitation of the Margalla forest region at the forefront of its green agenda.

The initiative reflects the long-term environmental vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who aims to leave behind a healthier and more sustainable Pakistan for generations to come. Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb is spearheading the campaign and overseeing its implementation across the province.

As part of this drive, a major tree plantation event was held in Taxila to accelerate the restoration of the Margalla forest belt. The campaign drew strong participation from students of schools and colleges, along with local youth and community members.

Organizers encouraged young Pakistanis to take ownership of the country’s environmental future by actively planting trees and supporting conservation efforts.

Chief Conservator of Forests Punjab, Iftikhar-ul-Hassan Farooqi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding green cover and tackling environmental challenges. He emphasized that special initiatives are being designed to involve young people and women, ensuring inclusive participation in tree plantation and forest preservation activities.

Member of the National Assembly Asiya Tanoli termed the campaign a forward-looking step under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. She pointed out that Pakistan is facing serious climate change impacts and stressed that large-scale afforestation is the need of the hour. According to her, more than 200,000 saplings are planned to be planted in Taxila as part of the restoration efforts, underscoring the scale of the initiative.

Meanwhile, Member of the Provincial Assembly Mohsin Ayub Khan praised the consistent support provided by the Chief Minister and Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb for forest conservation programs. He also acknowledged the proactive role of the Punjab Forest Department in executing the plantation drive.

The event concluded with participants planting saplings, symbolizing a renewed pledge to expand forest cover and protect the environment throughout Punjab.
