PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters protests, which are centered around allegations of negligence in the medical care of PTI founder Imran Khan, have caused significant disruptions across parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a concise two-page directive, the court directed law enforcement agencies to lift all blockades today, citing the hardship caused to the public. The court noted that the petitioner’s lawyer highlighted that road closures had led to the deaths of patients in transit, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Traffic congestion persisted on several key routes as PTI activists maintained sit-ins and protests against what they describe as delays in Khan’s treatment, who has been incarcerated since August 2023. Notable protests included a sit-in at the Swabi motorway rest area, which halted traffic on the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway, and a continued demonstration at the Havelian Interchange in Abbottabad, blocking access from both Islamabad and Mansehra. Additionally, protesters near the Rashakai-Motorway Interchange in Nowshera prompted authorities to advise commuters to take alternative routes via GT Road.
During the hearing, the PHC summoned officials including the KP Advocate General, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chief Secretary. The court noted that both the IG and the Chief Secretary admitted to the road closures caused by protesters but failed to provide satisfactory action plans. The court expressed disappointment with the response from authorities and directed the IG to ensure no further road blockages occur, instructing law enforcement to swiftly restore traffic flow.
Meanwhile, a separate petition has been filed before the Federal Constitutional Court by citizen Khawaja Azhar Rashid. The petitioner urged the court to order the immediate removal of roadblocks across KP, warning that ongoing closures during Ramadan could result in shortages of essential supplies and hamper daily life. Rashid emphasized the importance of maintaining free movement within the province.
The protests are also linked to demands for Imran Khan’s transfer to a hospital for his eye treatment. PTI leaders and supporters continue their demonstrations, including a sit-in outside KP House in Islamabad, now into its fifth day. The party’s lawmakers are also staging a protest at Parliament House, advocating for Khan’s access to his personal doctor and family members during this critical time.
