Sindh govt plans expansion of Bus fleet to strengthen Karachi’s transport system

KARACHI: In a move aimed at easing commuting challenges in the metropolis, the Sindh government has decided to add more buses to Karachi’s public transport network to improve mobility and provide greater convenience to residents.

The decision was made during a high-level session of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing transport initiatives and identifying measures to enhance the city’s transit infrastructure.

Officials assessed the progress of major projects, including the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, and discussed strategies to further streamline services for commuters. The gathering was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, Yellow Line Project Director Kamal Dayo, Trans Karachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, along with engineers and project consultants.

During the briefing, Trans Karachi’s chief executive provided a comprehensive update on the Red Line BRT project, highlighting completed milestones, current obstacles, and upcoming targets. Authorities noted that construction work on the corridor is progressing, although certain operational and logistical challenges persist.

Addressing the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon expressed satisfaction with the overall advancement of the Red Line but stressed the need to speed up execution. He instructed all relevant departments to carry out daily progress reviews, reiterating that the corridor’s timely completion is a top priority for the provincial government.

He emphasized that expanding and modernizing Karachi’s transport network is essential to reducing traffic congestion, minimizing travel hardships, and offering citizens a reliable and efficient commuting system.
