ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s business sector has denounced recent negative narratives targeting the country’s GSP Plus status, urging the government to take decisive measures against those attempting to weaken this vital trade advantage.
At a press briefing, S.M. Tanveer, accompanied by Kamran Arshad, stressed that maintaining GSP Plus is crucial for Pakistan’s economy. He noted that the country earned this status for the 2024–2027 period through the coordinated efforts of multiple stakeholders and emphasized that it should not be compromised under any circumstances.
Tanveer highlighted the positive impact of GSP Plus on exports and overall economic growth, calling it a key factor in strengthening the nation’s financial stability.
While recognizing ongoing economic challenges, he praised government and institutional efforts to improve conditions and called for more free trade agreements to further boost export performance.
Kamran Arshad underscored the tangible benefits of GSP Plus, pointing out that Pakistan’s exports have surged from under $2 billion in 2013 to $9.5 billion today, with the trade facility playing a significant role. He urged authorities to safeguard the status, placing national economic interests above all else.
Business leaders also stressed that continued dialogue between the government and taxpayers—both filers and non-filers will be essential to fostering a stable and sustainable economic environment, promoting long-term growth for the country.
