Punjab announces free public transport amid massive fuel price hike

LAHORE: The provincial government of Punjab has unveiled a major relief package, including free public transport, following a steep increase in fuel prices across Pakistan.

The move comes after the federal government raised petrol prices by Rs138 per litre to Rs458.40, while diesel surged by Rs184 per litre to Rs520.35.

In a statement, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that public transport services will be free of cost for passengers across the province. The initiative covers key transit systems including the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train, Metro Bus, Speedo buses, and Green Electric Buses.

As part of the broader relief measures, the government has also approved financial support for farmers, including a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on diesel. Additionally, registered motorcycle owners will receive a petrol subsidy of Rs100 per litre on up to 20 litres monthly.

Maryam Nawaz said the package aligns with the austerity and savings measures introduced by Shehbaz Sharif, aimed at easing the burden on citizens during challenging economic conditions.

She emphasized that providing relief remains a top priority, stating that the government will stand by the people during difficult times. She also encouraged citizens to rely more on public transport amid rising fuel costs.

The chief minister noted that the global economic situation, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts, has driven up oil prices, particularly affecting countries like Pakistan that depend heavily on fuel imports.

Meanwhile, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman strongly criticized the fuel price hike, calling it a “petrol bomb” on the public. He announced a nationwide protest campaign against the increase and urged citizens, especially the youth, to take to the streets in protest.
