WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were quickly escorted out of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night after an armed individual attempted to break through security, according to officials.
Authorities said the suspect, carrying a shotgun, fired multiple shots near a security checkpoint. A U.S. Secret Service agent was struck, but protective gear prevented any serious injury. The suspect has since been taken into custody.
Senior government officials attending the event were also rushed to safety as chaos unfolded inside the ballroom. Witnesses described panic as attendees dropped to the ground after hearing gunfire, with some shouting warnings for others to take cover.
The annual dinner, held at the Washington Hilton, was immediately disrupted. Security personnel flooded the stage, evacuated the president and first lady, and secured the venue.
In a message posted afterward, Trump confirmed that all key officials including cabinet members and the vice president were unharmed. He praised law enforcement for their swift response and said the situation was under control.
Officials reported that between seven and eight shots were fired during the incident. Investigators are still working to determine how the attacker was able to approach such a heavily secured event.
The evening’s program was ultimately canceled. Trump indicated the possibility of rescheduling the event at a later date.
This incident has raised serious concerns about security at one of Washington’s most high-profile gatherings, which typically includes top political leaders, journalists, and public figures.
In remarks following the incident, Trump said he had spoken with the injured Secret Service agent, noting that the officer was in good condition and in high spirits thanks to his protective vest.
