ISLAMABAD: The government and opposition appear to be moving towards dialogue as Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai reportedly responded positively to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation for talks.
According to sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Achakzai for a meeting either at the Prime Minister’s Office or the Prime Minister’s House to discuss the country’s political situation.
However, sources said the opposition leader suggested that the meeting should take place at a “neutral venue” instead of official government offices. He reportedly expressed reservations about meeting at the Prime Minister’s House or Office.
Initially, Achakzai agreed to hold the meeting at the residence of Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah, sources added.
Reports further revealed that contacts between the government and opposition were established last week as both sides explored the possibility of negotiations.
The expected discussions are likely to focus on the overall political climate, including consultations regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission.
