Govt declares May 26–28, 2026 as Eid ul Adha holidays

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially notified public holidays for Eid ul Adha 2026, declaring May 26, 27, and 28 (Tuesday to Thursday) as days off across the country.

According to a Cabinet Division notification issued on Wednesday, the Prime Minister approved the three-day holiday period for the religious festival.

Eid ul Adha is expected to be observed on May 27, following the announcement by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee after the sighting of the Zilhaj moon on May 17. The committee met at the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Karachi, where it confirmed the start of Zilhaj 1447 AH from May 18.

The committee stated that credible moon sighting reports were received from multiple regions, leading to a unanimous decision on the lunar calendar dates.

Also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid ul Adha commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before the act was divinely replaced with a ram.

The festival is marked by special Eid prayers, family gatherings, and acts of charity, including the sacrifice of animals, with meat distributed among relatives, friends, and those in need.
