Power Minister responds to LESCO corruption allegations after Khawaja Asif’s complaint

ISLAMABAD: Federal Power Minister Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari announced that disciplinary measures have been initiated against officials of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) following allegations of a Rs80,000 bribe for transformer repairs.

The controversy gained momentum after Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif publicly accused officials of demanding money to fix an electricity issue, prompting the government to act. Leghari appreciated Khawaja Asif for highlighting the issue and emphasized the importance of accountability within the system.

“Public accountability is vital. We welcome questions from all levels, including our own cabinet, and respond accordingly to enhance transparency,” Leghari stated.

In response to the allegations, the LESCO Board ordered a high-level investigation and warned that stern action would be taken against any officials found involved in corruption or misconduct. The inquiry aims to scrutinize the conduct of those linked to the case, including LESCO’s chief executive.

The incident has reignited discussions about corruption and efficiency within Pakistan’s power distribution sector. The LESCO Board condemned the reported demand for money despite the intervention of a federal minister, calling it a troubling sign of systemic flaws.

A spokesperson for the board confirmed that a detailed inquiry is underway, and all personnel connected to the case will be questioned. The board emphasized that any employees found responsible for misconduct would face strict disciplinary measures.

“The claim that a transformer was only replaced after the Rs80,000 payment raises serious concerns and damages public confidence in the utility’s integrity,” the statement read.
