ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a decrease of Rs1.98 per kilowatt-hour in electricity charges as part of the quarterly adjustment mechanism for the first quarter of 2026.
An official notification from NEPRA confirms the tariff cut, which is expected to benefit consumers with a relief exceeding Rs67 billion. This reduction will be visible on electricity bills for the months of June, July, and August.
The notification clarifies that the nationwide adjustment will apply to all consumers, including those supplied by K-Electric, with the exception of lifeline consumers who will remain unaffected by this change.
Earlier, on May 18, 2026, the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) highlighted that proactive government measures, sound policy decisions, and efficient load management played a crucial role in preventing a significant hike in electricity prices for June 2026.
The ministry’s statement indicated that, without intervention, consumers could have faced an increase of Rs5 to Rs6 per unit due to rising global fuel prices, disruptions in RLNG supply, and increased dependence on furnace oil-based generation. However, the government successfully avoided passing these additional costs onto consumers.
The Power Division also noted that improved operational efficiencies, lower transmission losses, and ongoing policy stability contributed to the Rs1.93 per unit reduction under the quarterly tariff adjustment. This move is projected to ease electricity prices for consumers and save approximately Rs65 billion in overall costs.
