LAHORE: The Punjab government is preparing to roll out a significant new program aimed at reducing environmental pollution and increasing access to electric bikes for residents.
This initiative seeks to encourage eco-friendly transportation options in response to rising fuel costs and increasing public interest in affordable commuting alternatives. Officials highlight that electric bikes can decrease reliance on costly petrol and contribute to environmental conservation.
In the first phase, approximately 10,000 electric bikes will be made available for rental in Lahore. Alongside this, 300 docking and charging stations will be set up across the city to facilitate easy access and charging facilities.
The Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) will allocate land for these stations, ensuring better connectivity between neighborhoods, commercial centers, and existing public transport hubs.
The project aims to significantly lower Lahore’s carbon footprint by potentially reducing thousands of tons of emissions annually, thereby aiding in the reduction of smog and urban air pollution.
Designed as an affordable, modern, and convenient mode of transport, the service will allow users, including students and workers, to rent e-bikes via a mobile app.
Details regarding rental rates have not yet been disclosed, and it remains uncertain whether the bikes will be available on an hourly or daily basis.
