Supreme Court ends four-day workweek, restores regular court schedule

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has revoked its earlier decision to implement a four-day workweek, bringing an end to the energy conservation measures introduced across the country’s judicial system earlier this year.

According to an official notification, Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has approved the withdrawal of the March 10, 2026 directive that introduced austerity steps, including revised court timings and a shortened working week.

The latest order will take effect from June 15, 2026, after which all administrative arrangements made under the previous notification will no longer remain in force.

As part of the earlier energy-saving initiative, courts had adopted new operating hours, while the Islamabad High Court and district judiciary shifted to a Monday-to-Thursday work schedule to reduce electricity consumption and optimize resource use.

The Supreme Court said all administrative measures introduced under the conservation plan have now been discontinued, restoring the judiciary’s regular operational framework.

It added that any future changes to court timings or working days will be made in accordance with the relevant laws, rules and administrative requirements.

The decision officially ends the temporary austerity policy that had been in place since March and returns court operations to their previous schedule.
