RAWALPINDI: On Monday, intelligence officials defended Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement in fostering dialogue between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that Islamabad’s mediatory role aimed at averting a broader regional conflict that could severely impact the economy and stability of the Muslim world.
Addressing various national and regional concerns, the officials highlighted the complexity of the US-Iran negotiations and asserted that Pakistan has taken a responsible stance to help de-escalate tensions. They credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and the military leadership for their diplomatic initiatives.
“Pakistan believes in substantive diplomacy, not superficial gestures, which is why our efforts have been successful,” the officials stated. They warned that speculation and misinformation surrounding sensitive diplomatic issues could jeopardize these efforts.
The officials explained that Pakistan’s proactive involvement was driven by the potential threat of prolonged conflict, which could destabilize the region and cause economic devastation across neighboring countries. They stressed that a wider war would threaten the entire Muslim community’s stability and prosperity.
While most details of the US-Iran agreement remain confidential due to its sensitive nature, the sources emphasized that Pakistan acted sincerely and without seeking any material benefit. They praised the leadership of the armed forces and regional Muslim countries for supporting peaceful diplomatic solutions, noting that Pakistan’s success was achieved without military confrontation.
Pakistan’s Dialogue with Afghanistan
The officials reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to resolving issues with Afghanistan through dialogue and diplomacy, underscoring that a stable Afghanistan is vital for regional peace and security. They expressed concern over terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, describing them as a threat to both regional and global safety.
Highlighting Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, the officials shared operational data indicating that between January 1 and June 15, 2026, the security forces conducted 32,092 intelligence-driven operations nationwide, including 5,710 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 24,718 in Balochistan. During this period, 1,402 terror incidents occurred in KP and 748 in Balochistan. The operations resulted in the elimination of 1,861 terrorists and the martyrdom of 640 security personnel.
Despite these challenges, the officials reiterated Pakistan’s preference for engagement and dialogue over confrontation in dealing with Afghanistan.
Situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)
Turning to AJK, the officials claimed that recent protests, initially focused on issues like flour prices, electricity tariffs, and public rights, had evolved into a broader political movement. They alleged that behind these demonstrations was a hidden agenda aimed at destabilizing the region.
They defended Pakistan’s democratic process, stating that it encourages dialogue and negotiation. The officials rejected claims that the government had blocked roads in AJK, asserting that any such measures were undertaken by groups described as anarchist elements.
The officials further accused these groups of attempting to destabilize the region and stated that some members had resorted to armed resistance against the state. They warned that the true intentions of these groups were becoming clearer to the public and emphasized that the government was handling the situation carefully and deliberately.
They also highlighted that the people of Indian-administered Kashmir continue to support Pakistan and that AJK remains a politically active region.
Defense Spending and Security Challenges
Addressing the federal budget, the officials explained that the Rs3 trillion allocation for defense largely accommodates inflation and operational needs. Over 80% of the spending covers fuel, supplies, infrastructure, and maintenance. Compared to India’s defense budget of approximately $93 billion, Pakistan’s expenditure is proportionate to its security requirements.
They emphasized that Pakistan faces both conventional threats and non-traditional security challenges, necessitating adequate resources to maintain operational readiness.
Indus Waters Treaty
Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance on the Indus Waters Treaty, the officials declared that India cannot unilaterally suspend or end the agreement under international law. They emphasized Pakistan’s readiness to defend its national interests and vowed to safeguard water rights through every possible means.
Balochistan Stability and Development
On Balochistan, the officials alleged that India and foreign intelligence agencies were supporting terrorist groups operating within the province. They claimed that hostile elements aimed to hinder Balochistan’s development and prosperity.
The officials stated that Pakistan’s policy in Balochistan prioritized sustainable development and long-term stability. They mentioned ongoing projects aimed at improving local infrastructure and economic prospects, while also warning against attempts to target women through covert honey-trapping operations.
They rejected accusations of political interference, asserting that the provincial leadership’s selection was free of external influence.
May 9 Violence and Internal Politics
Commenting on the violence of May 9, the officials described the incident as a national challenge rather than a personal issue. They noted that individuals avoiding legal proceedings faced increasing pressure, and political parties with leaders in hiding struggled to operate effectively.
They reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stability, and development, emphasizing that the country would continue to safeguard its national interests through diplomatic, political, and security measures.
