NEPRA hikes electricity rates by 34 paisa per unit for May fuel adjustment

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has decided to raise electricity charges by 34 paisa per unit for consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi, marking a fresh increase at the onset of the new fiscal year. This decision is part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for May 2026.

As per a NEPRA notification, the revised rate will be applied to various consumer categories and will appear in electricity bills issued in July 2026. The move comes after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) initially requested an increase of 82 paisa per unit for the May 2026 FCA, but NEPRA approved a lower increase following review.

This incremental cost will further strain household budgets already grappling with rising expenses, as the additional amount will be incorporated into the upcoming July electricity bills. The adjustment aims to reflect the fluctuating fuel costs but is expected to add to the financial challenges faced by consumers across the country.
