WEB DESK: Spain claimed their second FIFA World Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina after extra time at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the match-winner, scoring the decisive goal to crown an outstanding tournament for the European champions.
Despite controlling possession and creating the majority of the scoring opportunities throughout the match, Spain struggled to break down Argentina’s disciplined defense. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced several outstanding saves to keep his side level during normal time.
The turning point came deep into second-half stoppage time when Argentina were reduced to ten players. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez received his second yellow card after a reckless tackle on Pau Cubarsi, leaving the defending champions to play the remainder of the contest with a numerical disadvantage.
Spain continued to dominate in extra time, patiently searching for the breakthrough against Argentina’s compact defensive setup. Their persistence was rewarded early in the second period of extra time when Nico Williams delivered an intelligent knock-back that Ferran Torres calmly converted into the winning goal.
Managed by Luis de la Fuente, Spain impressed throughout the tournament with their possession-based style and defensive resilience, conceding only one goal in seven matches on their route to the championship.
Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi, showed tremendous determination during the knockout rounds, overcoming Egypt in dramatic fashion before recovering from a deficit to defeat England in the semi-finals. However, they were unable to retain the trophy in the final.
First-Ever World Cup Halftime Show
The final also made history by featuring the FIFA World Cup’s first Super Bowl-style halftime show. International music stars Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS, and Coldplay headlined the 12-minute performance, joined by Brazilian football legends and cast members from Ted Lasso.
The spectacle included a heartfelt tribute to football legend Pelé, while conductor Gustavo Dudamel led a special performance of “Seven Nation Army” alongside musicians from the United States, Venezuela, and Iran.
To conclude the show, characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets appeared with Coldplay and a New York elementary school choir in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative focused on expanding access to sports and education for disadvantaged children.
Because of the entertainment program, halftime lasted a total of 27 minutes.
Record-Breaking Audience Expected
Tournament organizers promoted the event as the biggest gathering of musical artists supporting a single cause since Live Aid and predicted it would become one of the most-watched live music performances ever broadcast. FIFA President Gianni Infantino estimated that the final and halftime show could attract an audience of several billion viewers worldwide.
