SKARDU: The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who was among 10 climbers caught in a deadly avalanche on Broad Peak, has been recovered, the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) confirmed on Thursday.
Sakhi’s remains were located and retrieved by volunteers from Shigar who joined the search on their own initiative. The volunteers were identified as Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abu Zar.
The body was initially brought down from Camp One to Broad Peak Base Camp. It is expected to be transported to Skardu by an Army Aviation helicopter, subject to favourable weather conditions.
The avalanche struck on July 30, severing contact with a 10-member international climbing expedition led by 43-year-old British-Nepali mountaineer Purja. The expedition company later confirmed that none of the climbers survived the disaster.
The recovery operation is continuing, with the remains of two other mountaineers still unaccounted for. Search teams are making efforts to locate the missing climbers despite difficult conditions on the mountain.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan expressed deep condolences to Sakhi’s family and the wider mountaineering community over the loss.
Earlier, on August 6, the bodies of five other climbers recovered from the avalanche site were transported to Skardu.
