Developed by iOS programmer Noah Iarrobino, Carrier Pidge offers a playful, satirical twist on traditional messaging by simulating virtual carrier pigeons traveling over GPS-determined distances.
Here’s the concept behind Carrier Pidge: Each message is attached to a virtual pigeon’s legs, and the app calculates the distance and estimates delivery time based on the bird’s speed. The pigeons fly at a default speed of 110 mph, with a random variation of up to 25% to mimic weather conditions or fatigue.
Distance measurement relies on GPS technology, similar to what is used for live location sharing. Sending a message locally across town results in seconds, but a message sent across the country could take approximately 22 hours, while international messages might take several days. Users can watch their pigeon’s journey unfold on a live map, adding an element of anticipation.
The app introduces a high-stakes element: each virtual pigeon has a 0.2% chance of dying mid-flight. If a bird fails, the message is lost forever, forcing users to resend, emphasizing the slow and uncertain nature of communication.
Carrier Pidge features a unique interface, with contacts organized into a ‘Flock’ and conversations styled as vintage letters in an ‘Aviary’—all designed with a parchment-like aesthetic. The developer, Iarrobino, created the app as a side project in just three weeks, emphasizing its humorous and impractical nature.
Intended as a commentary on the culture of instant connectivity, Carrier Pidge embraces the concept of ‘slow social media,’ encouraging users to disconnect from the pressure of immediate responses and enjoy a more deliberate, nostalgic messaging experience.
