ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia have agreed to move ahead with a pilot container freight train as part of efforts to expand rail-based trade, improve regional connectivity and modernise Pakistan’s freight transport network.
Pakistan Railways has signed a Freight Forwarding Contract with Russian Railways Logistics (RZD Logistics), creating a framework for cooperation in international freight movement and multimodal logistics services.
Under the agreement, the two sides plan to launch a Pakistan-Russia Pilot Container Freight Train, which is expected to strengthen rail links between Pakistan, Russia and Central Asian markets.
The pilot service, however, could not be launched according to the original schedule due to the prevailing regional conflict.
Despite the delay, Pakistan Railways and RZD Logistics have maintained coordination and reaffirmed their commitment to start the service once regional conditions become favourable.
The initiative is expected to provide a more efficient and cost-effective rail-based freight route while supporting sustainable multimodal transportation and facilitating greater movement of goods across the region.
The partnership will also encourage the exchange of technical knowledge and operational expertise in railway freight management, potentially improving the efficiency of Pakistan’s international logistics services.
Officials believe the project could contribute to the long-term modernisation and financial sustainability of Pakistan Railways by expanding its international freight operations and connecting the country more effectively with key regional and global trade corridors.
