Nurse Razia Noorain hailed as hero after daring PIMS newborn rescue

ISLAMABAD: Nurse Razia Noorain has emerged as a symbol of courage after risking her life to save a newborn during the deadly fire that broke out in the nursery of Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

Noorain reportedly rushed into the smoke-filled nursery and rescued a newborn in just eight seconds, placing herself in grave danger as flames spread through the facility.

Her extraordinary act of bravery has drawn widespread admiration across Pakistan and attracted international attention, with The Washington Post highlighting her courageous rescue amid the public outpouring of praise.

In recognition of her actions, the government has announced that Noorain will be awarded the Sitara-e-Khidmat and a financial reward.

Her courage has also brought people from different sections of society together, with members of both Muslim and Christian communities praising her selfless actions.

Recalling the incident, Noorain said she never entered the burning nursery with the intention of becoming a hero. As a nurse and a mother, she said, her immediate instinct was to protect the vulnerable newborns under her care.

She explained that the moment she saw the fire, her attention was focused entirely on getting the babies to safety. Fear for her own life, she said, did not cross her mind.

Noorain’s swift intervention has since become one of the most powerful stories to emerge from the PIMS tragedy, which claimed the lives of newborn babies in the hospital nursery.
