SIALKOT: The Anti-Corruption Establishment has detained a Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department after he was caught accepting a bribe of Rs15,000.
According to the FIR, the accused, Sharif Ghumman, allegedly demanded the money from employee Zeeshan in exchange for facilitating his transfer. The case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Police Station, and authorities are now conducting further inquiries.
The FIR details that during the raid, Ghumman’s accomplices allegedly locked the anti-corruption team inside the office and attempted to hinder the operation. The suspects reportedly resisted arrest and resorted to violence against the officials.
An additional case has been registered against Ghumman and six other suspects, including a female employee, for interfering with official duties and trying to free the accused from custody. The FIR also mentions the involvement of 13 to 14 unidentified individuals.
Rana Mubashir, the Anti-Corruption Circle Officer, emphasized that strict action would be taken against government officials involved in demanding or accepting bribes.
In a related case earlier in August, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) apprehended a Pakistan Customs superintendent and two inspectors for allegedly demanding a bribe in exchange for favorable treatment in a customs case. The suspects initially demanded Rs5 million, which was later negotiated down to Rs2.5 million. They are accused of threatening to implicate the complainant’s family members if the bribe was not paid.
Following legal procedures and with approval from the relevant authorities, FIA’s Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad executed a trap operation at a café in Sector I-8 under judicial supervision.
