KARACHI: The goods transport industry has raised strong concerns over the detention of hundreds of vehicles by law enforcement agencies in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, just days before their planned protest on September 27.
Shahzad Awan, President of Goods Transport Ittehad, stated that approximately 700 trucks and containers have been seized by police authorities in the regions of Islamabad and Punjab. He claimed that these vehicles and cargo were taken under the pretext of preventing disruptions related to a political demonstration scheduled for later this month.
Awan emphasized that the detained cargo includes goods worth crores of rupees, comprising essential items like food supplies and raw materials for various industries. He warned that the continued detention puts billions of rupees worth of goods at risk of damage, along with the loss of the vehicles involved.
The transport leaders have urged the Punjab and federal governments to release the seized containers immediately. They have also warned that if their vehicles are not freed promptly, they will be forced to take intensified action and announce their future course of protest.
