LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has dismissed the petitions calling for an immediate halt to the detention orders of Imran Khan’s sisters, Noreen Niazi and Dr. Uzma Khan.
On Thursday, the court issued notices to the Punjab government and other involved parties concerning the legal challenge against their detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law.
The detention was ordered by the Lahore deputy commissioner for a duration of 30 days, starting from September 21, following police recommendations. Noreen and Uzma were transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail, while their sister, Aleema Khan, was detained a day earlier. The detentions occurred just before PTI’s planned nationwide protests and march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27, which aimed to demand Imran Khan’s release and the preservation of constitutional rights.
During the hearing, Justice Abher Gul Khan considered the petitions filed by Noreen and Uzma’s legal counsel, who urged the court to suspend their detention immediately. The court, however, refused to grant this request at the present stage, instead issuing notices to the respondents and asking for their formal replies.
Lawyers Mudassir Umar and Barrister Taimur represented Noreen and Uzma, arguing against the legality of their detention. The Punjab government’s legal representative, Farrukh Lodhi, appeared on behalf of the respondents.
Earlier, Aleema Khan was detained while leaving her Lahore residence for a gym visit. She was later moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail. Her son, Shahraiz Khan, challenged her detention along with that of her driver through a petition filed before the Lahore High Court.
On September 22, the court reviewed the legal basis of the petition and postponed further proceedings until September 25, seeking additional arguments to clarify the situation.
