ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has called for electoral reforms to ensure elections are free, fair and transparent, with no stakeholder having grounds to raise objections.
Ashraf urged opposition parties to become part of the election reforms committee and contribute proposals to improve the electoral system.
Speaking to the media, he said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had emphasised in Parliament that credible elections were essential to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring an effective legislature.
He said the opposition had heard the proposal and would respond after consultations. Ashraf expressed hope that opposition parties would join the committee and actively participate in the reform process.
Commenting on discussions with opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the PPP leader said political dialogue remained an important means of resolving differences.
He stressed that cooperation among political parties was necessary to strengthen democracy, Parliament and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Ashraf said political forces should set aside their differences and work together to develop an electoral system that commands broad confidence and strengthens the country’s democratic institutions.
