WEB DESK: Angelina Jolie remains firm in her decision to undergo a double mastectomy and have her ovaries removed as preventative measures.
In a recent interview with Hello magazine, the “Maria” actress opened up about these life-altering surgeries, which she opted for after discovering she carried the rare BRCA gene mutation.
The BRCA gene, known as the BReast CAncer gene, significantly raises the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Individuals with this genetic mutation often face a higher likelihood of developing cancer at younger ages compared to those without it, according to information from cancer.gov.
Acknowledging her personal journey, Jolie shared, “I carry the BRCA gene, which led me to make the choice to undergo a double mastectomy a decade ago. Later, I also decided to remove my ovaries because ovarian cancer is what claimed my mother’s life.”
Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away in 2007 at the age of 56 after battling breast and ovarian cancer.
Now 50 years old actress stands by her decisions and respects that others may choose different paths. Reflecting on this, she explained, “These were the choices I made for myself. I don’t believe everyone has to follow the same route, but having options is crucial. I have no regrets.”
