GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan has moved closer to high-speed 5G connectivity after the Special Communications Organisation (SCO) successfully conducted a trial of the next-generation mobile service in the region.
According to an SCO statement, the successful test marks an important milestone in efforts to strengthen digital connectivity across the mountainous territory.
The organisation said 5G technology could significantly expand opportunities in information technology, e-commerce, online education, telemedicine, tourism and digital entrepreneurship.
The improved connectivity is expected to be particularly beneficial for young people, enabling them to pursue digital careers, access online education and explore new avenues for entrepreneurship without being constrained by limited internet speeds.
The SCO described the trial as a significant move towards bringing advanced telecommunications technology to Gilgit-Baltistan and expanding access to reliable, high-speed internet.
The development comes amid growing demands for the region to be included in Pakistan’s nationwide 5G expansion. Concerns had emerged over Gilgit-Baltistan’s access to the technology after commercial 5G services began rolling out in other parts of the country earlier this year.
The SCO said enhanced connectivity would help strengthen the region’s digital economy while creating opportunities across sectors such as IT, e-commerce, tourism, education and healthcare.
However, the organisation did not announce a timeline for the commercial launch or wider rollout of 5G services across Gilgit-Baltistan.
The successful trial nevertheless represents a key step towards improving the region’s digital infrastructure and connecting its residents to emerging technology-driven opportunities.
