HYDERABAD: Pakistan’s Senate was informed on Friday that construction work on the long-awaited Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway is expected to begin later this year.
During the Senate’s question hour, Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan stated that approval has already been granted for three out of the motorway’s five sections, while the tendering process is currently underway. He added that the government is also focusing on increasing the revenue of the National Highway Authority (NHA) to improve the country’s road infrastructure.
In a written response to the House, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Chaudhry Salik Hussain highlighted government initiatives aimed at expanding overseas employment opportunities for Pakistani workers. He said Pakistan is strengthening labour mobility through bilateral agreements with various countries.
Referring to a recently signed memorandum of understanding with Italy, the minister said the agreement offers an annual quota of approximately 3,500 Pakistani workers over the next three years. The opportunities will cover sectors such as agriculture, construction, healthcare, hospitality, logistics, and information technology.
He further informed the Senate that a high-level committee has been formed to ensure effective employee engagement and proper utilization of overseas employment quotas.
Meanwhile, Advisor on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah addressed concerns raised by opposition lawmakers regarding the PTI founder and his spouse. He maintained that both are receiving the best possible medical care available. However, he alleged that prison regulations and jail manuals had been violated during meetings with the PTI founder, claiming those meetings were used for political purposes.
The Senate also approved two important pieces of legislation: the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council Bill, 2026, and the Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The Upper House has now been adjourned and will reconvene on Monday at 5:00 pm.
