PM Sharif directs advance preparations for monsoon season

ISLAMABAS: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered authorities to begin early preparations for the upcoming monsoon season, stressing the need for stronger monitoring and emergency response measures across vulnerable regions.

During a meeting in Islamabad with Climate Change Minister Dr. Musadik Masood Malik, the prime minister emphasized activating and strengthening the early warning system to minimize risks from heavy rains, flash floods, and other climate-related disasters.

Officials briefed the premier on nationwide monsoon preparedness plans, including progress on installing warning systems for flash floods and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in northern mountainous areas.

The prime minister directed relevant departments to maintain constant surveillance of high-risk locations and ensure timely coordination during the monsoon period.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast mainly hot and dry weather across most parts of the country over the next 12 hours, with extremely hot conditions expected in Sindh and southern Balochistan.

However, isolated areas of upper Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and the Potohar region may experience partly cloudy weather accompanied by rain, gusty winds, dust storms, and thunderstorms.

Morning temperatures recorded in major cities included 20°C in Islamabad, 28°C in Lahore, 29°C in Karachi, 23°C in Peshawar, 18°C in Quetta, 11°C in Gilgit, and 13°C in Murree.

In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, partly cloudy conditions are expected in Srinagar, Leh, Pulwama, Baramula, Anantnag, Shopian, and Jammu. Temperatures there ranged from 6°C in Leh to 24°C in Jammu.
