PMD warns of intense heatwave in Sindh as temperatures may hit 50°C

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning about a severe heatwave expected to affect several parts of Sindh from May 25 to 31, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 50°C in some districts.

The advisory comes ahead of Eid ul Adha holidays, when large numbers of people are expected to travel across the country.

According to the Met Office, a strong high-pressure system is likely to form in the upper atmosphere from May 25, pushing temperatures significantly above seasonal averages.

Areas including Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana and Dadu are expected to face the harshest conditions, with temperatures ranging between 47°C and 50°C. Other districts such as Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur, Ghotki and Naushahro Feroze are also likely to remain under intense heatwave conditions.

The PMD further stated that Hyderabad, Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mirpurkhas could record temperatures between 44°C and 47°C. Similar weather is expected in Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro and Sanghar.

Authorities have urged citizens — especially children, senior citizens and women — to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and stay hydrated during the extreme weather spell. Farmers and livestock owners have also been advised to take protective measures to minimise heat-related damage.

Meanwhile, Karachi is forecast to witness hot and humid conditions over the next three days. The city’s temperature is expected to remain between 35°C and 37°C, though humidity levels may make the weather feel hotter.

Earlier, the Met Office had warned that the upcoming heatwave could impact large parts of the country, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, as the high-pressure system intensifies from May 26 onward.
