ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has declared its intention to oppose the federal government’s proposed amendments to the Islamabad local government law during upcoming parliamentary proceedings, according to sources. The current ordinance governing local governance in Islamabad is set to lapse on September 5, and the government aims to push through the new legislation in the standing committee this week.
Sources indicate that the ruling coalition intends to leverage its majority to secure approval for the bill, but discussions are ongoing between PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to coordinate a unified opposition stance. Both parties are reportedly considering joint efforts to block the legislation in Parliament, potentially presenting a united front against the proposed amendments.
The opposition parties argue that the federal government cannot pass the new local government law in Islamabad without securing support from the PPP. If the legislation is not ratified by both Houses of Parliament before the deadline, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) may proceed with conducting local government elections in Islamabad based on the existing delimitations.
In related developments, PPP Member of National Assembly Ramesh Kumar expressed confidence in the party’s position, citing ongoing communication with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Kumar highlighted the close relationship between PPP President Asif Ali Zardari and Naqvi, suggesting that strong ties with the Interior Minister provide the party with political stability amid current tensions.
Kumar acknowledged that some influential circles are displeased with the PPP but reassured that the party remains resilient as long as communication with Naqvi continues. He also pointed out the complacency within PML-N and emphasized PPP’s strategic flexibility in navigating the current political landscape.
Recent meetings between Naqvi and Zardari, especially following the ‘system-reset’ discourse, have been viewed as efforts to maintain dialogue and stability within the political environment.
