LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a monthly stipend of Rs70,000 for agriculture graduates selected as interns, in a move designed to attract young talent to Punjab’s farming sector.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where she highlighted the importance of integrating educated youth into agriculture through initiatives like the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” programme. Under the scheme, interns will receive practical field training, farm management exposure, and opportunities to contribute to modern agricultural practices.
Maryam Nawaz said the initiative would empower skilled young professionals to actively participate in strengthening and transforming Punjab’s agricultural economy.
Rooftop hydroponic farming pilot
In a first for the province, the government has also cleared rooftop hydroponic farming projects. The model allows cultivation of approximately 280 to 350 plants on rooftops as small as two marla, using specially designed frames and protective polythene sheets.
Initially, 10 pilot projects will be launched in Lahore, with plans to collaborate with private housing societies to expand the concept.
Push for sustainable agriculture
As part of its climate-friendly agenda, the provincial administration approved the solarisation of 10,000 diesel-powered tube wells to reduce fuel dependency and operational costs.
Additionally, under the Punjab Agriculture Mechanisation Project, the government aims to distribute 28,000 super seeders by 2028 to promote modern farming techniques and improve productivity.
Green Tractor Programme expanded
The chief minister also gave the green light to Phase IV of the CM Green Tractor Programme. In the new phase, subsidies for high-horsepower tractors will be set at Rs1.5 million, while support for low-horsepower tractors has been raised from Rs500,000 to Rs700,000.
Rainwater harvesting for farms
For the first time, Punjab will introduce ground recharge wells aimed at collecting and storing rainwater on farmland. The initiative is expected to improve groundwater replenishment and support more efficient irrigation practices.
The package of reforms reflects the provincial government’s broader strategy to modernise agriculture, promote environmental sustainability, and create meaningful employment avenues for young people.
