Islamabad: Chairman of the Islamic Ideological Council, Allama Raghib Naeemi, has issued a clarification regarding his earlier statement on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), which had been mistakenly described as “un-Islamic.” He explained that the statement contained a typographical error, and emphasized that VPNs had not been declared un-Islamic.
Recently, the Islamic Ideological Council had announced that the use of VPNs was un-Islamic and forbidden. As a result, the Ministry of Interior sent a letter to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), instructing it to block unregistered VPNs. Following the directive, PTA took action and shut down several VPN services.
In a press conference on Wednesday in Islamabad, Allama Raghib Naeemi clarified that the council had discussed the use of social media during their recent meeting. He highlighted that social media is a powerful tool for the exchange of ideas and opinions. However, it must not be used to promote blasphemy, insult religious figures, or foster sectarianism and extremism.
