Trump says Iran talks could take place in Islamabad on tuesday

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has indicated openness to holding talks with Iran, suggesting a possible meeting in Pakistan on Tuesday if Tehran chooses to engage.

Speaking after a security incident at a press event in Washington, Trump said communication with Iran could take place “whenever they wish,” adding that diplomatic channels remain available. He clarified that the previously planned visit of US envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Pakistan was cancelled due to a change in the timing of discussions with Iranian officials rather than any escalation in tensions.

Trump noted that the anticipated meeting with Iranian representatives had been rescheduled, making it impractical for US officials to undertake long-distance travel to Islamabad. He stressed that the decision to cancel the trip should not be interpreted as a move toward renewed conflict, reiterating that Washington is still open to dialogue.

The US president also claimed that divisions within Iran’s leadership were complicating the situation, suggesting uncertainty over who holds decision-making authority.

According to him, internal disagreements among various factions have contributed to instability in the region.

In separate remarks, Trump praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating diplomatic efforts. He described Asim Munir as “outstanding” and commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting Islamabad’s willingness to support negotiations involving Iran.

Security scare at Washington event

Earlier, a dramatic security incident unfolded during a formal media dinner in the US capital, where gunfire erupted near the venue. Secret Service agents swiftly moved to protect Trump, escorting him away from the scene as panic spread among attendees.

According to officials, an armed individual attempted to breach a security checkpoint near the event. Security personnel responded by opening fire and subduing the suspect, who was taken into custody. Trump later described the attacker as a potential “lone wolf.”

One officer was reportedly injured during the confrontation but did not sustain serious harm. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security arrangements at high-profile events attended by the US president.
