UAE under fire: missiles, drones launched from Iran intercepted

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has reported that its air defence systems are actively responding to incoming missiles and drones launched from Iran.

According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, forces began intercepting ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones, late Monday. Officials later confirmed that three missiles were successfully shot down, while a fourth landed in the sea. There have been no immediate reports of fatalities, and Iranian authorities have not yet issued a response.

The escalation comes as tensions rise following stalled efforts to extend a ceasefire tied to the broader conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Disputes over maritime restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz have further intensified the situation.

In Fujairah, authorities reported that a drone strike caused a fire at an oil facility. Emergency teams quickly responded to control the blaze. Three Indian nationals were injured in the incident and transported to hospital with moderate injuries.

These attacks disrupted a period of relative calm in the UAE that had followed a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan between Washington and Tehran on April 8. That agreement had temporarily halted more than two months of heavy fighting across the Gulf region.

During the earlier phase of the conflict, the UAE faced the highest number of attacks, as Iran carried out retaliatory strikes. Emirati defence systems reportedly intercepted and destroyed thousands of incoming missiles and drones during that period.
