Disqualification References ‘Filed’ Against SIC MPAs in ECP

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has submitted disqualification references against 26 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)

On June 27, 2025, opposition members allegedly caused disruptions and property damage during a Punjab Assembly session. In response, the Speaker suspended the memberships of these 26 SIC lawmakers.

The following day, June 28, 2025, the Speaker announced his decision to refer the matter to the ECP for the disqualification of the suspended members. He visited the ECP office in Islamabad to formally submit the references, which include evidence of the lawmakers’ disorderly conduct.

The purpose of these references is to revoke the membership of the 26 SIC MPAs, citing violations of assembly decorum and constitutional norms. The ECP is expected to review the case and determine the fate of the lawmakers in accordance with legal procedures.

It is noteworthy that the Punjab Assembly Speaker suspended 26 opposition members for “causing disturbances during proceedings.” The suspension covers the next 15 sittings due to their breach of decorum.

The suspended members include Malik Fahad Masood, Muhammad Tanvir Aslam, Syed Riffat Mehmood, Yasir Mehmood Qureshi, Kalimullah Khan, Muhammad Ansar Iqbal, Ali Asif, Zulfiqar Ali, Ahmed Mujtaba Chaudhry, Shahid Javed, Muhammad Ismail, Khayal Ahmed, Shehbaz Ahmed, Tayyab Rashid, Imtiaz Mehmood, Ali Imtiaz, Rashid Tufail, Murtaza Iqbal, Khalid Zubair, Ijaz Shafi, Saima Kanwal, Muhammad Naeem, Sajjad Ahmed, Rana Aurangzeb, Shoaib Mir, and Usama Asghar Ali Gujjar.

One of the suspended legislators, PTI MPA Mian Ijaz Shafi, stated, “It is our democratic right to protest.” He claimed, “We have been suspended on the orders of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. We will not be silenced at any cost,” emphasizing their resolve to continue their political stance
