PESHAWAR: At least five policemen were martyred and as many injured as terrorists attacked the law enforcers simultaneously in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The attacks targeted law enforcement officials in Upper Dir, Lower Dir, and Peshawar late Wednesday night.Unidentified militants struck police mobile units in Upper Dir, killing three officers and injuring three others. Additionally, police officials successfully repelled assaults on Hassan Khel Police Station near Peshawar and two security checkposts. Despite their efforts, one officer died and another was wounded in the attack on the police station, while a constable lost his life during an assault on a checkpost in Lajbok area of Lower Dir.
Authorities had recently announced plans to intensify operations against militants in Bajaur and Khyber districts, following failed negotiations with tribal elders over demands such as the expulsion of militants from tribal regions. According to sources, approximately 300 terrorists are present in parts of Bajaur’s Mamund tehsil, with over 350 in Khyber District.
This spike in militant activity reflects a broader trend of increased terrorist incidents across Pakistan since 2021, with KP and Balochistan being particularly affected. A recent report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) indicated that in June alone, the country experienced 78 terrorist attacks resulting in at least 100 fatalities.
