WEB DESK: Judge Frank Caprio, widely celebrated as “America’s Nicest Judge” and a beloved star of Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88. Known to millions for his compassionate approach both on and off the bench—and for his popularity on TikTok—Caprio leaves behind a legacy of kindness and a touching love story.
Throughout his life, he was supported by his devoted wife, Joyce, with whom he shared over six decades of marriage. Her steadfast companionship was the cornerstone of his personal and professional journey.
Caprio, who gained fame through his courtroom show Caught in Providence, which aired from 2018 to 2020 and was nominated multiple times for Daytime Emmy Awards, died peacefully after a long and brave battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a statement shared on his Instagram account on August 20.
“Loved for his compassion, humility, and steadfast belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched countless lives through his work and his kindness,” read the tribute. “His warmth, humor, and genuine care left a lasting impression on everyone he knew.”
The statement continued, “He will be remembered not only as a highly respected judge but also as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His legacy endures through the many acts of kindness he inspired. Let us honor his memory by striving to spread more compassion in the world—just as he did every single day.”The world has lost a truly humble and kind-hearted judge. To honor him, here is one of my favorite clips from Caught in Providence.
Caprio was renowned for presiding over his courtroom with empathy and understanding, which often led to his clips going viral on TikTok in recent years. His compassionate demeanor earned him the nickname “Nicest Judge in the World.” His popularity online soared, with over three million followers on Instagram and 1.6 million on TikTok.
In 2023, Caprio shared that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in a heartfelt Instagram video. He revealed that his diagnosis occurred around his birthday—the day he usually considers one of the happiest days of the year.“This birthday feels different,” Caprio expressed. “Recently, I wasn’t feeling well, went for a medical checkup, and received some difficult news. I’ve been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which is a particularly aggressive form of the disease.”
Reflecting on his journey, he urged kindness: “Be kind to people.”
On August 19, in a video from his hospital bed, Caprio addressed his followers, saying, “Last year, I asked for your prayers, and I truly felt your support, which helped me get through a tough time. Sadly, I’ve faced a setback. I’m back in the hospital and once again ask for your prayers and good wishes.”
