FBI announces arrest in Charlie Kirk shooting investigation

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that law enforcement has apprehended the individual responsible for the deadly shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university. Trump indicated that the suspect was taken into custody after an extensive search that lasted over a day.

During an interview, Trump revealed that someone familiar with the suspect had come forward to authorities, aiding in the arrest. This development concludes a tense manhunt that began following the incident on Wednesday, when Kirk was shot during a public event in Orem, Utah.

The attack took place at Utah Valley University during Kirk’s appearance at a debate titled “Prove Me Wrong,” attended by approximately 3,000 people. According to investigators, the suspect arrived on campus shortly before the event started and gained access to the roof, where he fired a single shot that struck Kirk in the neck, resulting in his death.

Security footage showed the suspect ascending stairwells and reaching the roof before opening fire. Witnesses reported seeing the shooter jump from the roof and flee into nearby residential areas. Law enforcement recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle from a wooded area close to the scene. Investigators are examining evidence such as footprints and palm prints to piece together the suspect’s identity.
