Violent TLP Protest in Muridke , Clashes with Law Enforcement Agencies

Lahore: The case of violent protests involving the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Muridke, along with the attack on law enforcement agencies, has raised serious concerns about public safety and state order.

During the unrest, which erupted on the night of October 12 and continued into October 13, a police officer lost his life, and a dozen others sustained injuries.

According to police sources, initial efforts were made by the administration to engage the protesters in dialogue, suggesting they relocate the demonstration to a less disruptive area. However, TLP leaders reportedly incited the crowd further during the discussions.

The protesters adopted violent methods, including throwing stones, wielding banana sticks, and hurling petrol bombs. Several police officers were injured, and some lost their lives due to gunfire. A preliminary investigation revealed that the bullets used were fired from a weapon seized during the chaos.

In response, law enforcement resorted to baton charges and tear gas to prevent further escalation. However, this only intensified the violence.

Protesters reportedly burned at least 40 government and private vehicles and set several shops ablaze. In total, 48 police personnel were injured, including 17 with gunshot wounds.

Civilians were not spared from harm either three TLP workers, a passerby, and approximately thirty civilians were reported injured.

The mob also hijacked multiple vehicles, including a university bus, using them to block roads and intensify their protest. Eyewitness accounts mentioned instances where vehicles were driven recklessly towards the public.

Protesters targeted the police with stones, sticks, and petrol bombs, while shooting incidents were reported in various locations.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed several arrests; however, notable figures like Saad Rizvi and other leaders escaped from the scene. A search operation is underway to apprehend those involved in inciting violence and disrupting public order.

Police described the unrest as a premeditated act of violence orchestrated by TLP leadership to endanger public safety and state property. The looting, arson, use of petrol bombs, and snatching of weapons unequivocally rule out the possibility of these protests being peaceful.

The death of an innocent passerby has drawn nationwide concern. Police have underscored the necessity for a unified strategy by the state to ensure the safety of civilians and protect public and private property from such incidents. Moving forward, those responsible will be held accountable under the law to prevent similar events in the future.
