LHC implements total ban on commercial activities on Sundays

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has mandated a complete prohibition on all commercial operations every Sunday, during proceedings related to the ongoing smog and environmental pollution case.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the bench also emphasized strict enforcement of existing orders regarding the closure of wedding halls by 10 PM. Deputy Commissioner Lahore Musa Raza appeared before the court and presented a notification concerning the closure of markets and restaurants at that time. The court responded, stating, “Issuance of notifications alone is insufficient; they must be implemented rigorously.”

Justice Shahid Karim highlighted that the restrictions are aimed at curbing the rising levels of pollution and smog in Lahore’s atmosphere.

Mian Irfan Akram, representing Wasa, informed the court that efforts are underway to upgrade the sewerage system. The bench instructed Wasa to submit a detailed report on the ongoing projects and their expected timelines. Additionally, the court ordered that a senior officer from the environment department must attend every hearing of the case.

The next hearing was scheduled for November 7, as the court adjourned proceedings. On Monday, the Lahore High Court expressed its dissatisfaction with the government’s measures to combat smog, voicing concern over the worsening air quality and non-compliance by restaurants regarding their operating hours. Justice Shahid Karim reiterated that the court has been actively working on smog-related issues for the past seven years.

He clarified, “This court’s proceedings are not against any individual but are meant to guide and support the government’s efforts.” The court also identified transport as responsible for approximately 70% of the city’s pollution and stressed the importance of self-accountability rather than blaming others.
