Pakistan to experience biggest supermoon of the year tonight

KARACHI: Stargazers across Pakistan are set to witness a spectacular celestial event tonight as the largest and brightest supermoon of the year graces the night sky, according to a statement from the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

This phenomenon, known as the Beaver Supermoon, takes place when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear significantly larger and brighter than usual.

At 6:19 PM, the supermoon will reach its peak, coming as close as 221,817 miles from Earth. As per SUPARCO’s spokesperson, the moon will appear 9.7% larger and 16% brighter compared to its usual size and brightness.

The spokesperson remarked that this event promises a breathtaking experience for skywatchers, with the luminous moon dominating the evening skyline.

The November full moon is traditionally named the Beaver Moon, a term originating from Native American tribes who observed this as the season when beavers prepare their winter shelters. Since this full moon coincides with the moon’s nearest approach to Earth, it is known as the Beaver Supermoon.

SUPARCO shared that this marks the second supermoon of the year, following an earlier one seen just a few months ago. The third and final supermoon of the year is anticipated in December.
