Parliamentary committee reviews 27th constitutional amendment bill Today

ISLAMABAD: The Joint Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice convened on Sunday at Parliament House to deliberate on the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.

The session, co-chaired by Senator Farooq H. Naik and Mehmood Bashir Virk, is conducting a clause-by-clause review of the proposed legislation.

According to parliamentary sources, the committee is expected to give its approval later today, after which the bill will be presented in the Senate for formal debate.

Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, speaking to reporters following the cabinet’s earlier approval of the draft, revealed that the amendment seeks to institutionalize key reforms. Among them is a proposal to confer the title of Field Marshal as a lifetime rank.

The amendment further suggests establishing a Federal Constitutional Court to adjudicate constitutional issues, while shifting the authority to transfer judges to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), with input from the respective high court chief justices.

Additionally, the proposed changes aim to reform the Senate election process, recommending that elections be conducted nationwide at the same time rather than in staggered intervals every three years.
