Traffic constable in Karachi claims assault by Senior Officer

KARACHI: A traffic police constable has alleged that he was physically assaulted and publicly humiliated by a senior officer at the Mehmoodabad Traffic Section, sparking anger among bystanders who stepped in to stop the incident.

According to the constable, the officer subjected him to violent behavior, including punching and kicking, choking him by the neck, and tearing his uniform. The incident reportedly left the constable in tears, drawing the attention of people nearby who halted traffic and intervened.

The constable further claimed that he was verbally abused and insulted with inappropriate and degrading remarks. Addressing the onlookers, he said that despite being assigned to the Mehmoodabad Traffic Section, he routinely performs the workload of multiple personnel. He also alleged that the officer warned him to either follow orders unquestioningly or quit the job.

When citizens tried to raise the matter with the station officer (SO), the officer allegedly reacted aggressively and behaved rudely toward them as well.

Separately, a tragic incident occurred earlier in the day when a four-year-old child lost his life after being hit by a water tanker in the Farid Colony area of Orangi Town. Police said the accident took place within the jurisdiction of Momin Abad Police Station in Faqeer Colony.

The child, identified as Sufiyan, died on the spot, while the tanker driver fled the scene. Law enforcement officials have since seized the vehicle, and further investigation is underway.
