Australia’s first muslim cricketer Usman Khawaja announces retirement

WEB DESK: Usman Khawaja, notable as Australia’s first Muslim cricketer, has declared his retirement from international cricket.

The veteran player revealed that the upcoming fifth and final Ashes Test against England will mark the conclusion of his illustrious career. This match, his 88th Test appearance, will cap off an extraordinary journey in the sport.

Khawaja reflected on his career with gratitude, appreciating the chance to represent Australia on the global stage. The 39-year-old, who originally migrated from Pakistan, emphasized his pride in his Muslim identity and noted that his path serves as an inspiration for others striving to overcome barriers.

Since making his Test debut in 2011, Khawaja has accumulated over 6,000 runs during a career spanning 15 years. Beyond cricket, he has made a lasting impression through the Usman Khawaja Foundation, aimed at empowering and supporting underprivileged communities—a legacy acknowledged by Cricket Australia.

In a highly decorated career, Khawaja was honored with the ICC Test Cricketer and Shane Warne Test Cricketer of the Year awards in 2023. He was also a key member of the Australian team that secured the ICC Test Championship in the same year.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg lauded Khawaja’s immense influence, commending both his elegant batting style and his significant contributions off the field through his foundation.

Over his career, Khawaja has featured in 87 Test matches, 40 One-Day Internationals, and 9 T20 Internationals. His final bow will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground when the final Ashes Test begins on January 4.
