Pakistan reaffirms support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity: Ishaq Dar

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reiterated Pakistan’s firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and internationally recognised borders, strongly criticising Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland.

Speaking at the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, convened to discuss Israel’s move, Dar described the decision as a direct challenge to Somalia’s territorial integrity and a violation of international norms.

He said Pakistan unequivocally condemns Israel’s action, stressing that no state or external actor has the authority to alter the recognised borders of another country. “Under international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity are inviolable. Any attempt to change them carries no legal or political weight,” he said.

Dar noted that Pakistan has already raised the issue at the United Nations, warning that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland could destabilise the Horn of Africa and pose risks to peace and security in the Red Sea region.

Highlighting Somalia’s internal progress, the deputy prime minister said elections conducted through public participation reflect the country’s democratic advancement. He also paid tribute to the Somali people and their security forces for their sacrifices, saying their efforts deserve international respect and support.

He warned that Israel’s action violates the UN Charter and international law and could weaken both regional and global initiatives aimed at countering terrorism.

Dar further emphasised the need to strengthen Somalia’s state institutions and pursue transparent economic reforms, while also calling for an end to the war in Gaza and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance for affected civilians.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s broader stance on regional issues, he said Islamabad will continue to work closely with the OIC and Arab nations in backing the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination
