Raja Nasir Abbas appointed opposition leader in Senate

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Secretariat has confirmed Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as the new leader of the opposition after weeks of delay due to legal and procedural issues.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani made the announcement during a session, noting Abbas has the support of 22 senators, meeting the required strength. He emphasized that the appointment strictly adhered to legal and parliamentary rules. The position had been vacant following Shibli Faraz’s disqualification, with delays caused by resolved judiciary matters.

PTI members responded with desk-thumping and slogans, supporting their party founder, while members from both sides congratulated Abbas, creating a mixed but dynamic atmosphere. The Question Hour was suspended for the appointment proceedings, and Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar’s motion was unanimously approved.

Tarar congratulated Abbas, expressing hope for constructive politics despite differences. However, government member Nasir Butt made sarcastic remarks questioning PTI’s candidate eligibility, triggering reactions from opposition members.

Earlier, government-opposition consultations with the Senate chairman resolved all matters regarding the appointment. Gilani assured that the process complied with constitutional and legal standards, paving the way for smoother legislative functions.
