CM Punjab orders audit of fire safety systems across Punjab after Gul Plaza Tragedy

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a comprehensive audit of fire safety systems across the province in response to the devastating fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza.

In her statement, the chief minister revealed plans to develop new standard operating procedures (SOPs) and upgrade fire safety measures throughout Punjab. She stressed the importance of conducting thorough inspections in both public and private buildings to mitigate electrical short circuit risks and ensure timely prevention of fire-related emergencies.

She further assured that government offices, hospitals, schools, and private institutions would be rigorously evaluated to implement robust safety protocols. According to Maryam Nawaz, every possible step would be taken to minimize fire hazards and prioritize public safety.

The death toll from the Gul Plaza inferno climbed to at least 29 as rescue workers continued to search through the wreckage. Meanwhile, 86 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Sources confirmed the identification of three additional victims from the tragedy, bringing the total identified bodies to 11. However, 17 remains are still awaiting DNA identification at the morgue.
