Gul plaza disaster: Karachi’s municipal commissioner Afzal Zaidy removed from office

KARACHI: In the aftermath of the Gul Plaza tragedy, the Sindh government has replaced Karachi’s Municipal Commissioner, Afzal Zaidy. The Chief Secretary of Sindh, Aftab Shah, officially issued a notification announcing the administrative change.

The order directs Afzal Zaidy to report to the Services, General Administration, and Coordination Department. In the meantime, the responsibilities of the Municipal Commissioner have been temporarily assigned to Simiah Hassan, a Grade 19 XPCS officer, who will serve as acting commissioner.

Zaidy’s tenure came under scrutiny following the death of 3-year-old Ibrahim, who fell into a sewer on November 30th. The incident prompted widespread criticism and ultimately led to his removal from the post.

Sources from the Sindh government also indicated that Zaidy’s performance during the Gul Plaza fire was deemed unsatisfactory. Recently, he was barred from traveling abroad.

According to immigration authorities, Zaidy had arrived at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi with the intention of flying to Turkey but was stopped and offloaded from the flight after his name appeared on the no-fly list.
